Classics

Classics is offered at both Junior and Senior cycle as an exam subject. It is uniquely placed to develop a range of skills and capabilities in preparing pupils for life and work.

As a subject it helps to develop skills in analysis, interpretation, summary, argument, evidence gathering, discussion, communication, performance and creativity. Although the subject is dependent upon texts, imagery and written evaluation, Classics will suit a pupil who has an interest in storytelling, adventure and the study of the human psyche.

The subject is such a unique learning opportunity for a pupil, as at its’ core, Classical seeks to foster an appreciation for uniqueness and develop an analytical and communicative mind, in a variety of disciplines.

What will I learn in Classics?

Some of the things you will learn include:

  • Students will learn about Myth and story telling. They then go on to study some classical texts like the Iliad
  • Students will develop an understanding for ancient languages as the foundation for modern language leading to developing analytical skills, investigate key phrases and the meaning of words
  • Students will also learn about what life was like in the ancient Greece and Rome through looking at archaeological and visual evidence.
  • Students will explore Roman and Greek history through examining public buildings, structures and sites.

How is Classics assessed for Junior Cycle?

Classics is a common level exam. You will complete two CBAs in 2nd Year, followed by an Assessment Task worth 10% of your total grade.

At the end of 3rd Year you will sit a two-hour examination worth 90%.
